A MicroMasters program is a graduate-level certificate and accelerated master's program offered online by some universities in collaboration with edX. Unlike professional certificates from most MOOCs, a MicroMasters credential also allows students to transfer coursework toward credits/units for a traditional master's program at participating universities. Select MicroMasters programs may include opportunities for on-campus labs, lectures, and office-hours with university professors and TAs.
MicroMasters programs are officially recognized by companies such as Adobe, Fidelity, IBM, and others.
The first MicroMasters program was offered in 2015 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in supply chain management. Students complete the coursework for the supply chain MicroMasters program through distance learning and can use it as a stand-alone credential, or continue to earn a master's degree through on-campus coursework at MIT. Other universities that offer MicroMasters credentials include the Columbia University, University of Queensland, Arizona State University, Thunderbird School of Global Management, University of British Columbia, and the University of Michigan.
